Charles E. Parish (1908-1975) is the namesake of the Charles E. Parish Wildlife Preserve, formerly Boxwell at Rock Island. Parish was a member of the Council’s Executive Board beginning in 1940. He served as Council President from 1957-1958. These years were critical in securing title to the land in Wilson County and developing a plan for what would become the fourth Boxwell on Old Hickory Lake. In 1972, the Rock Island property, which had been Boxwell during his tenure as President, was renamed in his honor. In his non-Scout life, Parish was president of Worth, Inc., a sporting goods manufacturing company. Specifically, Worth was the manufacturing firm responsible for the majority of aluminum bats made in the United States. Parish passed away on October 22, 1975. His son, John Parish, a Rock Island staff member, remains active in the Council today and supported the building of the Parish High Adventure building at Boxwell Reservation.
